Frequently asked questions

How does Advocata work?

You tell Advocata what type of appointment you need, then it finds the best doctor and appointment for you. Advocata researches the best matching doctors, calls each of their offices, and asks about each of your appointment needs.

By the end of the next business day, you'll receive an email with the best matches Advocata found for you. Just reply to book.

How is Advocata free?

We believe healthcare is broken and that there should be a better way. We've worked in healthcare, know the industry, and are giving our time to make the system a better experience for everyone while learning what is most helpful.

Eventually there might be a public benefit business here, but we're still figuring that out. There's truly no catch. Advocata can't operate like this forever, but today we're just here to help.

Why do patients need Advocata?

Finding healthcare is hard, and you deserve an advocate. We've heard too many stories of doctor's appointments sitting on to-do lists for months, family and friends struggling to find a new doctor after changing insurance, or patients never completing a referral. With Advocata, we hope you never have to deal with:

  • Waiting on hold only to find out a doctor isn't accepting new patients
  • Calling to verify your insurance is accepted or being surprised when it isn't
  • Finding time during business hours to call doctors
  • Insurance portal doctor directories with incorrect information

Advocata is here to make booking a doctor as easy as booking a dinner reservation.

Why does Advocata need until the end of the next business day?
Doctors' offices are typically only open during business hours, and Advocata needs offices to be open to call them for you.
Who makes the calls and books the appointment?
An automated phone assistant asks every office the same questions and records each answer. Then someone on the Advocata team recommends the best 3 options to you and books the appointment if approved.
What happens if there isn't an available appointment that fits my constraints?
You'll receive a summary of what Advocata's research found.
Does the patient ever have to phone an office?
In general, no. Rarely, an office will require the patient to briefly be on the line to authorize the booking. You'll never have to call an office other than the one we book with.
Why does Advocata need a date of birth and member ID? Is my information private and secure?

Insurance information is required for Advocata to ask the doctor's office whether your appointment will be covered by insurance.

Your information is stored on a HIPAA-compliant, private, and secure Google Cloud database. Only the Advocata employee making your booking and the doctor's office see your information. Advocata never sells patient information, and your data is deleted 30 days after the appointment.

Does Advocata charge doctors?
No. Advocata charges patients only, so your needs are always our top priority. Advocata ranks doctors by four facts: plan accepted, earliest opening, patient reviews, and the requirements on the form.
Which insurance plans work with Advocata?
Just about any plan other than Kaiser, which requires internal bookings. Any plan that covers a specialist without a referral: PPO, EPO, and POS plans from any carrier. HMO plans work, but you'll likely need a referral from your PCP before being able to see a specialist.
